The Conservancy Initiative is concerned that EGLE and some of our local leaders are growing numb to Arbor Hill’s nearly constant odors. 207 Odor Complaints were received during the first 59 days of 2025. The odor complaints are real, not fabricated or coordinated. They originated from 109 unique residents and resulted from the excess emission and noxious odors from the Arbor Hills Landfill.
The Conservancy Initiative has demonstrated that the odor complaints are very well aligned with the excess emissions measured by Green for Life’s emission monitor system located on the eastern perimeter of Arbor Hills. As the methane emissions increase, the odor complaints increase. Green for Life installed the emission monitoring system to settle the Attorney General’s lawsuit in 2022. The Attorney General’s press release stated the emission monitor system was to
“…detect and hydrogen sulfide and methane before they reach the neighboring subdivisions and cause a nuisance.”

The monitoring system regularly detects excess emissions, but actions to hold the Arbor Hills are not being taken.
The odor complaints also correlate very well with the direction of the wind. The charts below demonstrate that Westerly and Southwesterly winds result in increased odor complaints in Northville Township neighborhoods.
Less Westerly Winds = Less Odors

Washtenaw County Does not Need Arbor Hills.
Most of Washtenaw County’s trash is disposed of at the Woodland Meadows Landfill in Wayne County. A significant expansion was recently approved for Woodland Meadows ensuring plenty of capacity for the future.
The Arbor Hills Landfill is causing grave impacts in Northville Township, and it is not needed. Up to 25% of the trash accepted at Arbor Hills is imported from Canada. GFL is turning Washtenaw County, Michigan’s most environmentally friendly county, into a dump for trash from Canada and Metro Detroit. Enough is enough.
GFL used Arbor Hills to dispose of trash from Canada. Who benefits?
