Update on Arbor Hills and the Proposed New Landfill

Update from The Conservancy Initiative

The odors from Arbor Hills Landfill are continuing. During 115 days, from January 1 to April 25, there have been 363 odor complaints. This is unacceptable, and we expect things to get worse as Arbor Hills opens another new cell, even closer to Northville Township neighborhoods.

The good news is Arbor Hills has less than 3 years of capacity remaining (based on the current waste acceptance rate).

Unacceptable Level of Odors

There have already been 363 Odor Complaints related to Arbor Hills this year. A new landfill will haunt Northville residents for Generations.

NO NEW LANDFILL

New Landfill Proposal

Green for Life has proposed operating a new landfill just north of the current site, north of Six Mile Road. Permitting a new landfill at this site represents a once-in-a-generation decision to rid Western Wayne County of the odors, excess emissions, congestion from trucks, blowing litter, seagulls, etc. that the landfill brings to our community.

The Washtenaw County Materials Management Committee (MMP) and, ultimately, the Washtenaw County commissioners will decide our fate. The MMP committee meets monthly and is currently focused on increasing waste recycling opportunities. The committee is tasked with determining whether a new landfill is needed and making a recommendation to the County Commissioners.

The meetings are open to the public, and comments are accepted at every meeting (2 minutes per commenter). Respectful comments inform the committee members of issues. Upcoming meetings are planned for 10 AM at the Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center at 4135 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. Meeting dates are May 21, June 11, July 9, and Aug 13. A complete calendar of meetings, agendas, minutes, etc., can be found at https://www.washtenaw.org/3903/Materials-Management-Planning.
