100 Odor Complaints by January 24th

The Conservancy Initiative received 100 odor complaints in the first 25 days of January. Most of the odors were reported on six horrific days when the wind blew toward Northville and correlated closely with elevated methane (CH4) concentrations detected by the landfill's emission detection systems. Notably, these odors occurred on some of the year's coldest days, when no residents had open windows and few ventured outside.

More than 80% of the trash entering Arbor Hills originates in Canada or Metro Detroit, not Washtenaw County, the host county. The impacts on the community for the benefit of Canada and Metro Detroit are unacceptable. This site should never be considered for a new landfill.

NO NEW LANDFILL!

The Arbor Hills landfill has a state-of-the-art emission monitoring system on its eastern perimeter. Additionally, it uses drones to survey for leaks of landfill gas. These measures were implemented to address historic environmental violations. Despite this advanced equipment, GFL has shown that it cannot operate a landfill at this location without creating severe impacts on the surrounding community.

GFL is a poor neighbor. The landfill's main truck route relies on roads in neighboring Wayne County, and landfill leachate is disposed of using Northville Township sewers. Yet, GFL has made no effort to develop a relationship with its neighboring communities.

Ultimately, the Washtenaw County Commissioners will decide whether a new landfill will be constructed at this site. Now is the time for you to reach out to these commissioners and express your opposition to a new landfill in Salem Township.

Below is a chart showing how the odor complaints correlated with emission data at the landfill perimeter.

gfl’s equipment demonstrates the odors are real

Arbor Hills has state-of-the-art emission detection equipment on the eastern perimeter. Elevated methane (CH4) emissions indicate odor potential and odor complaints correlate very well with the emission detection system.

GFL’s emission detection system shows this landfill cannot be operated without toxic impacts on its neighbors.
