Michigan Doesn't Need a New Arbor Hills Landfill

From 2022–2024, Michigan landfills took in about 10.3 million tons of waste from Canada. In that same period, Arbor Hills accepted about 6.1 million tons of waste from all sources.

If Michigan stopped accepting Canadian waste, we could avoid the need for the equivalent of one to two landfills the size of Arbor Hills statewide.  Very few Michigan Landfills accept waste from Canada. Arbor Hills (Salem Township), Pine Tree Acres (Lenox Township), and Carleton Farms (New Boston) accept more than 95 percent of Canadian waste coming into Michigan. Each of these landfills is owned by a large, for‑profit corporation that profits from importing trash rather than serving local needs.

95% of Canadian Waste in michigan is accepted at 3 large landfills

Pine Tree Acres (Waste Magement), Carleton Farms (Republic Services), and Arbor Hills Landfill (GFL)

With more than 23 years of disposal capacity on the books, planned expansions at other landfills, and state goals to reduce landfilling through better recycling, a brand‑new landfill at Arbor Hills is unnecessary. It is a bad deal for Michigan communities and a great deal for the Canadian waste pipeline.
