The Conservancy Initiative has been quiet lately, but we have not gone away. We are convinced that there will soon be actions related to a potential expansion of Arbor Hills Landfill (a new landfill north of Six Mile Road). In the next week, we plan to post several short articles to update residents on activities at Arbor Hills that may significantly shape the area's future. Please review and share the articles with your friends and neighbors, and get ready to SPEAK UP for our community. This is a critical moment for our neighborhoods and your voice matters.
Arbor Hills Landfill Life
While we can’t pinpoint the exact date when Arbor Hills Landfill will reach its permitted capacity, we know it's approaching. A report prepared by EGLE in early 2024 estimated the landfill will fill to capacity in 6 years (see Table 4 on page 6 of 50). This aligns with our predictions based on the permitted capacity filled each year. It's important for us as a community to stay informed about these developments.
Green for Life owns over 200 acres of property north of Six Mile, near Napier Road, and plans to construct a new landfill there. The permitting process to gain approval for a new landfill could easily take three years, and work to construct a new landfill cannot begin until the permits are approved. Based on this timeline, we expect Green for Life to publicly announce its intentions later this year by submitting permit applications to Washtenaw County and EGLE.
