CALL FOR ACTION - WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We need the community to act now to prevent a NEW LANDFILL in Salem Township. This post contains instructions for attending and commenting at public meetings, as well as for contacting elected officials. The time is NOW. A decision is expected within six months. Please read and take action! A Town Hall is being scheduled for mid-January to answer your questions and provide more details.

STATUS - THE PROPOSED NEW LANDFILL

For over 50 years, the Arbor Hills Landfill in Salem Township has accepted a wide range of waste—from household refuse to industrial materials, including hazardous materials such as asbestos. The current landfill is expected to reach its permitted capacity within 2–3 years, but Green for Life (the Canadian owners/operators of the landfill) has proposed building a NEW LANDFILL adjacent to the Arbor Hills site. This NEW LANDFILL poses significant risks to our community's health, environment, and property values.

THE WASHTENAW CO. MMP COMMITTEE IS THE CRITICAL APPROVAL

Washtenaw County’s Materials Management Planning (MMP) Committee HOLDS THE KEY APPROVAL NEEDED FOR A NEW LANDFILL. The committee consists of twelve representatives from waste and recycling companies, local governments, environmental groups, and industries. They are assessing the resources needed to improve recycling and deciding whether new waste facilities—including the proposed landfill—are justified. Community input will soon be sought. It is time for residents living near the proposed NEW LANDFILL to SPEAK UP, opposing the NEW LANDFILL strongly!

COMMUNITY IMPACTS AND WHY NOW MATTERS!

Decisions made in the upcoming months will directly affect:

  • Air and water quality (including PFOS contamination of Johnson Creek)

  • Neighborhood property values

  • Quality of life for future generations

This may be our only chance to stop the construction of a NEW LANDFILL—permanently changing our region.

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP - NOW!

It is time for the community to SPEAK UP. We must influence our Community Leaders and Elected Officials. The landfill is currently LOBBYING these same Elected Officials.

  • Please take time to write and/or contact our elected officials. Write multiple letters!
