Washtenaw County MMP Meetings: Schedule, Strategy, and Landfill Approvals

Over the next 6–8 months, Washtenaw County will take the critical steps to approve or deny the proposed New Landfill north of Six Mile Road. This post provides residents with publicly available information on upcoming Materials Management Planning (MMP) Committee meetings, public comment opportunities, and how these fit into the decision timeline.

Key Decisions and Timeline

Before EGLE can issue construction permits for the New Landfill, county approval is needed:

  1. MMP Committee Approval – The Materials Management Planning (MMP) Committee will determine whether the landfill proposal aligns with Washtenaw County's goals for waste reduction, recycling, and composting.

  2. County Commissioners have the final vote – After the MMP committee's recommendation, the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners will take the final vote to approve or deny the landfill.

Upcoming Meetings – Timeline

  • Monthly MMP Committee working meetings. Visit the Washtenaw County MMP website for meeting time and location (Meetings are normally held on Wed at 10 AM in Ann Arbor). Short public comments (limited to 2 minutes) are accepted at the end of the 1.5-hour meeting.

  • A Public Participation meeting is tentatively planned for November 2026. This will be an opportunity to give input on the need for a New Landfill and the MMP. (More info to come).

  • A formal Public Hearing and a 60‑day Public Comment period must occur before the Board of Commissioners can consider approving or denying the landfill request. The Public Hearing is expected to occur in Early 2027.

  • The Washtenaw Board of Commissioners is expected to act to approve or deny the MMP (including the landfill decision) shortly after the Public Hearing is completed.  (Timing - TBD).

Upcoming MMP Meeting Schedule

The next MMP Committee meeting is scheduled for August 19, 2026 from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM at:

Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center – Superior Room
4135 Washtenaw Avenue
Ann Arbor, MI 48108

The actual meeting times and place are announced to the public on the Washtenaw County MMP website.  Meetings are open to the public. Public comments may be made at the end of the meeting, with each speaker limited to 2 minutes.

Strategy: Smart, Respectful Engagement at all Public Meetings

A few well‑chosen comments can be valuable, but repetitive remarks may backfire and anger the voting committee members we are trying to influence.

  • Read the room – Repetitive comments can frustrate committee members and Commissioners.

  • Keep comments respectful – Please do not verbally attack GFL or Salem Township residents. Our comments should focus on facts and community impacts to influence the committee members.

  • Thank decision‑makers – Please thank committee members and Commissioners for their time and service.
