Does Washtenaw Need a New Landfill?

Data can sometimes be very surprising. For instance, in FY2025, only 7% of the total waste accepted at the Arbor Hills Landfill (AHL) came from Washtenaw County, the host county itself. The vast majority of the waste originated elsewhere, with Wayne County, Oakland County, and even Canada making up the bulk of the intake.

Question to Consider

Why would Washtenaw County, probably one of the most progressive counties in the Midwest, volunteer to host a new landfill it doesn’t need, for the benefit of Wayne County, Oakland County, and Canada?

The Broader Impact

Excess landfill capacity and low tipping fees discourage local recycling efforts. Currently, Michigan has 23 years of remaining landfill capacity, and multiple expansions are already under consideration. Put simply, it is too easy and cheap to landfill waste in Michigan.
