We are only 12 days into December, and odors from the Arbor Hills Landfill have resulted in 69 odor complaints. The odor complaints were submitted during extremely cold winter weather, when windows are not open, and most folks avoid being outdoors.
In the chart below, we show the number of complaints by the day they were received. 49 of the complaints were received on just two days, December 2nd and December 12th. On both days, the winds were light, blowing out of the west (towards Northville neighborhoods). The chart also shows several days with zero odor complaints submitted. I point this out to demonstrate the integrity of the odor complaints. The odors are real – residents only submit complaints when significant odors are present.
When noxious odors are present, please continue to use The Conservancy Initiative's Odor complaint system to submit an odor complaint. The complaints are immediately forwarded to the landfill, EGLE, and other community leaders. Normally, this number of complaints would trigger an EGLE site inspection. We have contacted EGLE to determine if a site inspection has been conducted in response to the odors, but have not yet received a response.
The Conservancy will forward this short update to our elected officials to ensure they are aware of the ongoing odor issues.
