GFL Initiates Permit Process for New Landfill

On November 6, 2024, GFL requested that the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) conduct an Advisory Analysis for a new landfill proposed to be constructed on the composting facility property, which is located immediately north of the existing Arbor Hills Landfill. This Advisory Analysis is the first step in identifying and obtaining the necessary permits to construct and operate a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill (Type II Landfill) on the site. It will identify the required permits for landfill construction.

EGLE responded to GFL's request on November 19, outlining that the first requirement is for GFL to demonstrate that the new landfill is consistent with Washtenaw County’s approved Materials Management Plan (MMP). This requirement also presents our best opportunity to oppose the new landfill.

Washtenaw County Materials Management Planning Committee Meetings

The Materials Management Planning Committee held its second meeting this week. The planning process is expected to take at least 2 to 3 years. It is encouraging to observe the committee's focus on improving recycling rates and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. The committee does not anticipate addressing landfill capacity until at least the end of 2025.

The next MMP committee meeting is scheduled for January 8, 2025, at 10 AM and will be held at:

Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center

4135 Washtenaw Avenue

Ann Arbor, MI 48108

The meetings are open to the public, and anyone attending will be allowed 2 minutes to address the committee.
